The Indoeuropean Translator Widget is the simple plugin I am using for some of my blogs, which adds translations from and into most language pairs offered by Google, Altavista , InterTrans, Globe, Interpret and others. I prepared the first script to be able to report Indo-European Language for Europe news and to make our Proto-Indo-European grammar available in any possible language through online web machine translation.
This widget offers translations from and into (at least) all these languages:
English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Arabic, Bulgarian, Czech, Chinese (traditional and simplified), Danish, Greek, Croatian, Hindi, Korean, Japanese, Norwegian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Swedish and Finnish.
NOTE: The English version has links to other automatic translations, like Welsh, Catalan, Hebrew, Ukrainian, Turkish, Serbian, Tagalog, etc. (see this blog’s sidebar), while the Spanish version offers automatic translation into Catalan and Galician too.
This widget does not use flag images, it is probably one of the simplest scripts you’d be able to write to add this functionality, and it should be valid XHTML.
If you see the links in the sidebar of this blog, it means it is working in the latest version of Wordpress.
Version and Download:
It works since (at least) version 2.1. If you see the language links in the sidebar of this blog, it means it is working in the latest stable version of Wordpress.
You can download the latest version from the Official Wordpress Translation Widget website, or directly clicking on the ZIP download image to the right.
Installation:
- Extract indoeuropean-translator-widget.php into your wp-content/plugins folder (or a subfolder)
- Activate the plugin in Wordpress (under “Plugins”).
- Add the widget to your page (under “Presentation” -> “Widgets”)
- Set the options to select which language pairs you want displayed. Select:
- “Horizontal” to keep languages on the same line, separated by dots
- “Vertical” to create a list of languages.
Changes and other problems:
If you want other language pairs, or the whole code linking only to Yahoo, Google, or even other web translators, or maybe ask a question or make a suggestion, contact me. There are a thousand possible combinations and personal preferences, and I simply cannot prepare them all in advance. You can find me in carlos [at] dnghu [dot] org
